SAP Project Management Best Practices from Chris Salis

A client may have a variety of requests or aspirations for a project during any SAP implementation. As a result, having a broad set of guidelines or "best practices" as a reference point for SAP project managers can be highly beneficial. While these SAP project management best practices are applicable in most cases, they should not be interpreted as implying that there is only one solution to any specified client requirement. Often, there are multiple solutions to a single problem, each with its own trade-offs. As a result, each project team's responsibility is to organize the project activities accordingly.

One exception to this rule is when regulatory or statutory requirements define a specific way to comply, such as validating electronic records for food and drug manufacturers per the Code of Federal Regulation. However, best practices are commonly considered "tried and true" solutions to pervasive project requirements.

Chris Salis Recommends Tools for SAP Project Management

Different levels of project involvement can leverage these best practices. Committees and subcommittees, project management, and implementation partners are examples of these levels. Each of these key stakeholders is essential to any SAP project. An implementation partner will have a "superset" of tools at the level of an SAP project's sub-teams, such as functional development, development, and change management. These instruments may include:

● pre-defined business-process charts to share with the client,

● configuration accelerators to expedite the installation of standard application modules,

● training course materials connected with project in-scope functionality will be developed using coding development standards,

● templates for test plans, and

● methods for assisting with a project's change-impacts on the client organization.

These elements are a superset because the SAP implementation partner chooses the appropriate objects based on the client's implementation requirements.
